And while the two teams have been division rivals since 1999, their shared history dates back years before then.

In fact, it was 25 years ago on Thursday that the Browns played what marked their final game at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. More than one month prior to Cleveland’s 26-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Dec. 17, 1995, Browns owner Art Modell announced that he would be moving the team to Baltimore with the franchise ultimately becoming the “Ravens” a year later.

With Cleveland riding a six-game losing streak and eliminated from postseason contention, 55,875 fans packed Cleveland Municipal Stadium not knowing whether the city would ever host a professional football game again. What followed was an emotional atmosphere with players celebrating the victory with the Dawg Pound and fans ripping out the seats of the stadium that would be demolished a year later.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The Ravens would go on to become one of the most successful franchises in the NFL, winning Super Bowls during the 2000 and 2012 seasons. Upon returning to the league as an expansion franchise in 1999, the Browns have been one of the league’s worst teams, having amassed just three winning seasons — including this year, with Cleveland’s record sitting at 9-4 heading into Sunday’s matchup against the New York Giants.
