This wasn’t the exhale Rob Manfred was expecting at the end of a harrowing 2020 MLB season.
The Dodgers’ World Series victory was coupled with the news that Justin Turner had tested positive for COVID-19 and that’s the reason the star infielder was pulled from Los Angeles’ Game 6 victory.
Then came the presentation when the 11,000 fans in attendance made it sound like a sold-out stadium with the passion in which they booed the MLB commissioner. Manfred’s popularity cratered this offseason when he and the union held an already-risky season hostage over the financial consequences of a coronavirus-shortened and fan-less schedule.
Manfred also sounded a little peculiar during the his postgame interview with Fox, the trophy presentation for the team and World Series MVP Cody Bellinger.
ESPN Radio’s Chris Carlin suggested on Twitter that it was due to the PA echo inside the stadium. Others, without broadcasting expertise, had a different explanation.
