Sam Darnold appears ready to start for Jets after shoulder injury

After working through a shoulder injury, Sam Darnold is expected to take the field Sunday for the first time since Week 4.

Head coach Adam Gase said Friday before practice that barring any setbacks, Darnold should be good to go Sunday when the Jets host the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium.

“Things are trending in the right direction,” Gase said on a Zoom call. “Hopefully, barring any setbacks, we’ll get him going on Sundays. This Sunday.”

The 23-year-old Darnold has been considered week-to-week since suffering an AC joint sprain in his shoulder during the Jets’ 37-28 loss to the Denver Broncos on Oct. 1.

Gase turned to veteran backup QB Joe Flacco, who has started for the Jets in losses to the Cardinals and Dolphins in which team was outscored 54-10.

Asked if he would err on the side of caution with Darnold considering the Jets are still searching for their first win of the season, Gase said he wasn’t concerned about the third-year QB re-injuring himself. Gase said Darnold still feels a bit of pain in his shoulder, but he’s not complaining about it enough to keep him off the field.

“It’s one of those things, you don’t see anything that is alarming or looks different,” Gase said of Darnold. “I’m sure he doesn’t feel like he did Day 1 of Week 1 but he’s not giving us any of those indications, I don’t see any lack of velocity, I haven’t seen him throw any balls that were that either die or you couldn’t get the distance – I haven’t seen any of that.

“Everything looks normal. It’s just I’m sure he doesn’t feel great, like he did in Week 1.”
