“Wait Just a Little Bit Longer”

Four years after Stephen Colbert discovered that Donald Trump had won the presidency live on air, he returned to Showtime to recap yet another chaotic election night. Instead of airing a new episode of The Late Show, Colbert appeared on CBS’ sister network for an election night special that saw him urge caution in celebrating (or grieving) the early results. “We’ve been able to wait for this moment since November of 2016, and many of you waited in line for hours to make your voices heard,” said Colbert. “I know we’ve all got what it takes to wait just a little bit longer.”

Colbert’s Showtime special, Stephen Colbert’s Election Night 2020: Democracy’s Last Stand: Building Back America Great Again Better 2020, featured Zoom interviews with high-profile guests, a live performance from Arcade Fire, and even an animated Our Cartoon President bit, among other things. “I’m happy to be on Showtime,” said the host at the top of the special, but “holy sh*t, this is a weird f*cking election.” Yeah, you can say that again.

The live special continued as polls began to close, and it quickly became clear that this would be a close race between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. By the end of the hour-long event, Colbert managed to avoid the all-out disaster that dominated headlines in 2016, but he insisted that viewers be patient as America waits for all the votes, particularly mail-in and absentee, to be counted.

“It looks like we’ve reached the end of the show, and we still don’t know who won,” said the host after an evening of interviews and political analysis. “We’ve been waiting for this for so long. It’s like Christmas Eve. And not just because of the judgmental fat guy with the red hat. But because we’re all up late wondering if tomorrow morning, we’re going to get the present we’ve been begging for: a boring president.”

Colbert added that he’s “exhausted” from the past four years, and he’s eager to get to a place where he no longer needs to be “on high alert” at all times. “I understand your stress. I do,” he said, speaking directly to Showtime viewers. “But now I’m going to say something a little controversial, so don’t get mad at me. It’s actually a good thing we don’t know who won yet.”

“The truth is, the reason it’s taking so long to declare a winner is because we’ve had such a massive voter turnout,” he continued. “The point is, this year, millions of you braved the pandemic, an army of poll watchers, even the Post Office just to make sure you got to vote. Each and every one of those ballots deserves to be counted, whether they are votes for Joe Biden, votes for Donald Trump, or write-in votes for Boobs Boobs Boobs Post Malone Rulez!!!” Well, let’s hope Boobs Boobs Boobs Post Malone Rulez doesn’t actually take Wisconsin.
